- Some immune cells express CYP27B1 and can convert the inactive calcidiol (25-hydroxycholecalciferol) to active calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol) in an autocrine or paracrine mechanism. This allows for a local production of calcitriol that is needed for immune modification. This modification in monocytes/macrophages can produce an antibacterial response to infection.
